    中國書院萌芽於唐末,盛興於宋初,秉承儒家誠意、正心、修身、齊家、治國、平天下的教育精神,重視人格的養成、自學能力的培養與「尊師愛生」的優良傳統。當代高等教育幾乎成為專業知識與職業培訓的場所,過度的追求職業競爭力,使傳統重視培育社會責任的知識份子與清流的理想已經失落。古典的書院教育重視文化的涵養、人格的薰陶、社會責任的建立。於是透過共宿、共游、共學的生活學習,培養學生成為能夠承擔生命任務和社會責任的書院教育應聲而起。然而,書院教育難以立竿見影,近年國內各大學雖然紛紛推動,實施數年來,呈現不少問題
